Physical Health Issues Caused by Covid-19

Whilst you might think that any physical therapy needs stemming from the pandemic would be solely for patients’ rehabilitation purposes, it’s just the starting point.

Good Intentions

When lockdown was announced back in March 2020, most of us virtuously decided we would use the time wisely.

For example, loftily proposing to learn a musical instrument or foreign language was commonplace.

Similarly, many pledged to get fit and healthy.

Moreover, joining Joe Wicks every morning with gusto for his daily workout was a regular event!

However, unfortunately, this initial enthusiasm didn’t last long. Reports of COVID-19 deaths and statistics in the media drastically dampened spirits further.

In short, lockdown was tight and we were allowed only one trip outside per day. However, some of us didn’t even manage that.

The COVID Factor

It’s well acknowledged that humans need social interaction to maintain mental health.

Keeping that in mind, the true fall out of mental health issues attributed to COVID is yet to be discovered, and, sadly, the same is true of physical issues.

Whilst COVID times have taken their toll on our mental health, feelings of depression and lethargy have affected our physical movement too. For instance, being unable to play team games or join friends for yoga all have an adverse impact.

Couch Potatoes

Since March, social distancing and various restrictions have resulted in activity levels reducing substantially.

Moreover, a high percentage of the population has found themselves sofa-bound.

With fewer activities and events on offer, there’s a greater temptation to loaf around at home doing very little.

Whilst chilling out and relaxing has health benefits, the lack of exercise and mobility is causing a major problem

Vicious Circle

So, an obvious knock-on effect of doing less and less activity is, of course, putting on weight.

Consequently, a detrimental cycle begins.

Less exercise brings about weight gain and weight gain brings about less exercise.

Moreover, obesity puts greater strain on muscles and ligaments, giving rise to even further health issues.

As anyone who religiously uses a pedometer would agree, walking may be a gentle exercise but incredibly beneficial. Equally, moving about is crucial to long term health. A lack of mobility merely sets us up for problems for years to come.

Future of Chronic Pain

Even for those reluctant to exercise, some level of day to day physical activity forms part of COVID-free life.

However, in these strange times of restriction and anxiety, huge numbers of us are working from home.

Consequently, we don’t even walk the few steps from our home to our car!

As a result, there is no requirement to climb the usual staircase in the office or move around our workplace.

Additionally, many are sitting at makeshift workstations on chairs slightly worse for wear. It’s a real recipe for disaster.

As such, we’re fast becoming a society full of people with poor posture, lacking physical movement. Unless we literally take action, we will be a generation in constant chronic pain.
